During the Gold Rush in British Columbia, European settlers were creating their own path to riches. Some settled and profited near BC's coast, establishing pass-through supplies and housing for miners. This is a story about the Sumas region and how those settlers used Indigenous knowledge and resources to cultivate the land. Subsequently settlers drained a 318 square km lake and displaced the regions multiple Indigenous groups as well as creatures large and small that had called this area home for hundreds of years. This changed the landscape from diverse and thriving wetlands into some of the richest farm lands in the lower mainland.
